"Expatriation, obligatory or voluntary, always comes at a cost, and Latin America has produced more than its share of displaced artistry and longing for home. For almost as long as Europeans have sailed west across the Atlantic, the return voyage has carried wandering creativity back to the Old World. Among the itinerants, twin sisters Gianna (clarinet, bass clarinet, vocals) and Laura Caronni (lead vocals, cello, violin), born in Rosario, upriver on the Rio parana, left the Orquesta Académia del Instituto Superior de Arte del Teatro Colon in Buenbos Aires for advanced study at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse in Lyon. Now based in France, their conservatory training and immersion in North African and Latin American folk idioms inspires a beguiling cosmopolitan blend of classical, cabaret, tango and world traditions.
With minimalist acuity, 'Vuela' conveys a sense or yearning and an eye for the poetic in everyday life, with the sort of musical interplay that perhaps only siblings can sustain. This tribute to Ravel, Rimsky-Korsakov, Georges Brassens, Lhasa de sela, and more enlists Argentine tango negro pianists Juan Carlos Caceres, Lo'Jo singer Denis Péan, Algerian singer Farid Chouali, and found sounds from Argentina to embark on an enchanting voyage to beauty and sorrow at the heart of exile."
